Blocking of SMS containing URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others

Dear customers,


Please be informed that short message service (SMS) from local/international mobile number/sender codes which contain URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others will be blocked.


This is in accordance with the directive issued by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia (MCMC) to block all SMS that contains URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others as an initiative to reduce online scam.

Effective 1st September 2024, the short code exemption from MCMC will be revoked.


All SMS with above mentioned contents will be blocked from 30th August 2024 onward.

1. What is the reason for the SMS blocking that has been implemented?

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has instructed telcos to block the sending and receiving of SMS with URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others to prevent consumers from falling victims to online scams. This directive applies to both local and international Person-to-Person (P2P) SMS and Application to-Person (A2P) / Enterprise SMS and will take effect on 2nd July 2023.

 

2. Does the blocking of SMS apply when I am abroad or while roaming?
Yes, the blocking of SMS with URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others will take effect even when you are abroad or roaming.

 

3. Do I get charged if a SMS fails to send due to the implementation of SMS blocking?
No, you will not be charged for any SMS that is failed to send.

 

4. Will the recipient be able to receive SMS even though SMS has been sent successfully? Will I be charged?

Despite SMS being sent successfully, the recipient may not receive it. This could happen if the recipient's telecom provider has blocked the SMS due to regulatory requirements, which are beyond our control. Please be aware that sending SMS may result in charges, even if the SMS is blocked by the recipient's telecom provider.


5. How can I unblock all SMS sent to me?  

Currently, there is no option available to unblock SMS that have been blocked to prevent consumers from falling to victims’ online scams.

 

6. Can I still share personal details, phone numbers, and URL links with my family and friends despite the SMS blocking?
Yes, you can share URL link, personal details phone numbers and others via phone call or other messaging platforms. However, please be cautious and avoid clicking on links from unknown / suspicious senders, avoid responding and sharing of your personal details, and only log in to your eWallet or online banking account using the official URL and official mobile application directly. Share this advice with your loved ones.

 

7. Does blocking of SMS with URLs, personal details, phone numbers and others eliminate all potential scam messages?
While blocking of SMS with personal details, URLs, and phone numbers and/or others can greatly reduce scam messages, it does not guarantee complete elimination. Certain scammers may employ tactics to bypass blocking measures. It is crucial to exercise caution and implement additional security measures, such as avoiding clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information with an unauthorized party.

9. How do I log a report on an SMS content (from a scammer) that was not blocked?

If you encounter an SMS containing personal details, phone numbers and/or URL links from an unknown / suspicious sender that was not blocked despite the SMS blocking directive, you can get in touch with us.
