Fake Product Recall Scam

A fake product recall scam begins with an unexpected text or email claiming that something you bought online has been recalled or may be unsafe. The message may offer a refund and ask you to follow a link to check the recall or confirm your purchase. The link can lead to a fake shopping website that requests your login, payment or personal information. The scam may only become clear after your account is accessed, your information is misused, or unfamiliar transactions appear. 

Red Flags 

• Contact from an unknown number: The recall message/call comes from a random or unfamiliar phone number rather than a recognised retailer or shopping platform. 
• Unclear product information: The message/call uses a generic greeting or fails to clearly name the product, model or specific safety issue. 
• Unexpected recall or refund: You receive a recall notice or refund offer that you cannot connect to a product you bought or an order in your account. 
• Pressure to act immediately: The message uses urgent phrases such as “Stop using this product now”, “Claim your refund immediately” or “Urgent recall action required”. This pressure is designed to make you act before checking whether the recall is genuine. 
• Suspicious website link: They sent you a message directs you to click a link to review recall details and claim a refund.  
• Requests for sensitive details: The linked page asks for your account password, banking credentials or other personal details. 

Things to keep in mind

• Pause and do not rush. Take time to verify the recall through an official channel before clicking links, responding or sharing any personal or payment information. 
• Confirm the exact product. Compare the message with your order history, including the product name, model number and purchase details. If you cannot find a matching purchase, do not respond or act on the message. 
• Verify through official channels. Check the recall independently using the retailer’s official app, website, customer service or original order confirmation.  
• Do not click links from unknown senders. Avoid clicking links in unexpected emails or messages, especially if they ask you to verify your details, claim a refund, or receive a reward. 
• Monitor your account activity. Check your shopping, email and financial accounts for anything unusual. If you shared personal information, be extra alert for suspicious messages, transactions or account changes.
