Bulk Order Scam

Modified on Fri, 3 Oct at 10:16 AM

Bulk Order Scams are becoming an increasing threat, particularly for businesses that provide supplies or services. In these schemes, fraudsters impersonate buyers from reputable organizations— such as schools, universities, or property management companies. They contact businesses claiming to place a large, urgent order, often requesting items the business does not usually sell or demanding quantities that are difficult to fulfil at short notice. This tactic creates confusion and pressure, making it harder for businesses to think critically or properly verify the legitimacy of the request.

How the Bulk Order Scam Works:

  • Fake Buyer, Fake Supplier: The scammer (posing as the buyer) suggests a “trusted supplier” who can quickly provide the requested items. That supplier is also part of the scam.
  • Request for Upfront Payment: The fake supplier claims the goods are ready but asks for immediate payment to secure the delivery.
  • Fake Proof of Payment: To make things seem legitimate, the scammer might send fake payment screenshots showing that a deposit or full payment was made to your business. This tricks the business into believing the order is real and pushes them to pay the fake supplier upfront.
  • The Aftermath: Once the payment is made, no goods are delivered. The buyer and supplier disappear.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Be skeptical of large, urgent orders—especially from new customers. Scammers use urgency to pressure you into acting quickly.
  • Verify the buyer’s identity. Contact the organization directly using official contact details, not the ones provided by the buyer.
  • Check the supplier’s background. Look for a valid business address, website, and online reviews. Be cautious if the supplier only communicates through email or messaging apps.
  • Never pay upfront for goods from an unfamiliar supplier. Only pay upon delivery or use a secure payment method with buyer protection.
  • Educate your staff. Make sure your team knows the signs of a scam and talks regularly about new scam tactics.
