What are the tips and tricks for roaming?

Modified on Thu, 18 Dec at 1:51 PM

Before Travelling

1. Purchase a Roaming Pass that suits your travelling countries

If no roaming pass is purchased, the Daily Roaming Pass will automatically activate for Postpaid subscribers when roaming data is detected. This helps protect you from pay-as-you-use charges.

Note: You may pre-book Roaming pass up to 14 days in advance via CelcomDigi app

2. Turn off voicemail to avoid charges

Voicemail can incur roaming call charges even when the call isn’t picked up. If you’re not expecting calls or prefer not to receive them while travelling, turning off your voicemail can help you avoid these charges. Click here to learn how.

3. Ensure You Have Sufficient Credit Before Travelling

Before you travel, make sure your account has enough credit to prevent any service interruptions while roaming.

  • Prepaid: Ensure you have a sufficient credit balance.
  • Postpaid: Ensure your credit limit is not exceeded.

We recommend checking your credit balance or credit limit via the CelcomDigi app before your trip. You can request to increase your credit limit by reaching out to us via WhatsApp. Please allow 24 hours for the new credit limit to take effect.

4. Be aware of roaming limitations in the country you are visiting

If you are not able to access the Internet or voice call services while you are roaming, it may be due to limitations placed by the country’s network or government’s restrictions. Please read here for exclusion areas.

5. Understanding Voice Call Charges

  • Enjoy 15 minutes of free voice calls, including calls to Malaysia, calls within your destination country, and incoming calls, giving you more freedom to stay connected while travelling.
  • After your 15 minutes are used, standard pay-per-use call rates will apply. You can view the full list of roaming call rates here.

     During Travelling

1. Start roaming

Your roaming pass will activate automatically. Kindly ensure that Data Roaming is turned on when you arrive in your destination country. Click here to learn how to turn on roaming.

If If you haven’t purchased a Roaming Pass yet, you can still do so upon arrival:

  • If you have Wi-Fi: Purchase your Roaming pass via CelcomDigi app.
  • If you have no Internet connection: Purchase your Roaming pass by dialing *800#.

Note: If you are a Postpaid subscriber and do not plan to purchase a roaming pass, we recommend turning off Data Roaming. If Data Roaming is on without an active pass, the Daily Roaming Pass
(RM39/day) will be automatically activated when roaming data is detected.

2. Making calls abroad

To make a call while roaming, please key in +<Country Code><Phone Number>, then press call. This ensures your call connects correctly, no matter which country you’re visiting.

3. Self-troubleshooting

If the issue persists, please refer to our self-troubleshooting guide here for additional steps and solutions.

5. Optimising your roaming data usage

Low Data Mode (iOS) and Data Saver (Android) help you stay in control of your data while travelling by reducing background activity and limiting how apps use data. These features are especially helpful when you're on a limited plan, experiencing slower connections, or want your roaming data to last longer.

Here's how to enable it:

  • iOS: Go to 'Setting' > 'Mobile Service' > 'Mobile Data Option' > 'Data Mode' > 'Low Data Mode'.
  • Android: Enabling ‘Data Saver’ varies by device model, refer to your device's brand for instructions.

6. Roaming Passes and Add-Ons

All Unlimited Roaming Passes come with a daily high-speed Internet quota. If you’ve used up your quota and need additional high-speed data, you can easily purchase a Roaming Add-On while your pass is still active. Charges will apply based on the add-on selected.

After Travelling

1. Turn off data roaming

If you live near border areas such as Singapore, Thailand, or Indonesia, your device may automatically connect to a neighboring network. To avoid roaming charges, ensure Data Roaming is turned off in your device settings. Click here to learn how to turn off data roaming on your device.

2. No need to unsubscribe from a one-time roaming pass

If you purchased a one-time roaming pass, there’s nothing else you need to do after your trip as it won’t renew automatically.

For added peace of mind, simply keep Data Roaming turned off especially if you’re near a border area where your phone might connect to a neighboring network.
