Mule Account
Modified on Mon, 5 Aug at 10:16 AM
A "Mule Account" is an account used to receive and transfer illegally obtained funds for someone else. In these cases, fraudsters may approach individuals who have these accounts with attractive offers asking them to borrow, share or rent out their bank accounts or cards.
Important: If you are a mule account holder, you will be considered an accessory and accomplice to the crime, even if you are not directly involved or aware about it.
Scammers tend to focus on vulnerable groups in need of employment or quick money, presenting them with seemingly genuine opportunities through various methods:
- You’re contacted unexpectedly about a job with easy money that sounds too good to be true.
- Communication and advertisement of the job offer is online or via encrypted chat such as WhatsApp or Telegram Messenger.
- Your job responsibilities and tasks are unspecified and there’s no experience required.
- You are asked to open a new bank account in your name or on behalf of the company.
- You’re offered money or incentives for transferring funds.
- You're approached to hand over your ATM card and PIN number to a friend, online acquaintance or loan shark for use without the account owner's supervision.
- You are asked to sell or rent your ATM card and PIN number to another party and receives payment.

Things to keep in mind:
- Be cautious about unsolicited opportunities offering you the chance of making easy money.
- Verify any company which makes you a job offer.
- DO NOT accept requests to open a new bank account and hand over your personal bank cards or transfer money using your personal bank account.
- DO NOT share your login credentials, bank cards or TAC to a third-party including family members and close friends.
- If you suspect you’ve been used as a money mule, report it to your bank and the authorities.
