Travel Scam

Modified on Mon, 13 Jul at 12:14 PM

Planning a trip should be exciting, but scammers often take advantage of travellers looking for good deals or making last-minute arrangements. They may create fake booking websites, advertise non-existent accommodations, or send messages pretending to be airlines or hotels. A little caution can help you avoid financial loss and keep your travel plans on track.

Key red flags

  • Deals that seem too good to be true: Extremely cheap flights, hotels or holiday packages are often used to attract victims. Scammers often combine these offers with limited-time promotions, or claims of limited availability to pressure you into acting quickly.
  • Fake booking websites: Scammers create websites that mimic legitimate airlines, hotels, or travel agencies to trick people into making payments.
  • Accommodation that does not exist: Fraudsters may use stolen photos or fake reviews to advertise properties that do not exist and collect deposits from victims.
  • Unexpected messages about your booking: Emails, SMS, or messages claiming there is an issue with your booking, payment, or reservation. Scammers may claim your payment failed or missing credit card details and direct you to fraudulent websites to steal your personal and financial information.
  • Requests to pay outside the official platform: Requests to pay via personal bank accounts, cryptocurrency, or outside the official booking platform are major warning signs.
  • Fake customer support services: Scammers may impersonate airlines, hotels, or travel agencies through fake helplines, social media accounts, or online advertisements; offering assistance with bookings, cancellations, or refunds in order to steal money or personal information.
  • Fake visa or travel document services: Fraudsters may offer fast-track visas or travel permits, collecting fees and personal information without providing legitimate services.

Things to keep in mind

  • Book through trusted sources: Make reservations through official airline, hotel, travel agency, or reputable booking websites. Avoid relying solely on advertisements or links shared through messages and social media.
  • Verify deals before making payment: Compare prices across different platforms, read reviews, and be cautious of offers that seem significantly cheaper than similar listings.
  • Avoid clicking links in unexpected messages: Visit the official website directly instead of using links received through email, SMS, or social media.
  • Confirm customer support and travel requirements through official channels: Obtain customer service contact details from the company's official website and verify visa or travel requirements through official government sources.
  • Use secure payment methods: Pay using credit cards or trusted payment services where possible. Avoid direct bank transfers, cryptocurrency or any request to complete payment outside the official booking platform.
  • Take your time before deciding: Scammers often create a false sense of urgency with limited time offers or claims that immediate action is required. Pause and verify the information before proceeding.
