Scam SMS (Smishing)

Modified on Fri, 08 Mar 2024 at 04:48 PM

Scam SMS, also called phishing text messages or 'smishing,' is a rising worry. Cybercriminals send these messages, pretending to be trusted sources, with the goal of fooling people into doing things that can harm them, like clicking on harmful links, giving out personal information, or spreading harmful software that can lead to financial losses.

To better protect yourself from scam SMS messages, it's crucial to know how to spot their unique features.

  • Scammers often pretend to be big, trustworthy organizations like banks, government agencies, courier services, telecommunication service provider, etc.
  • Scammers create a sense of urgency or fear in their messages to pressure you into taking immediate action, such as claiming your account has been compromised, your account need to be updated, etc.
  • Offers that are too good to be true and attractive limited offers are also common tactics employed by fraudsters to lure individuals into their schemes.
  • Scam SMS messages may contain links to fake websites or phone numbers to call for further instructions. Clicking these links can lead to phishing sites or malware installation.
