FAQ: Using Roaming in Russia (Effective 6 Oct 2025)

Modified on Fri, 10 Oct at 9:30 AM

1. Why can’t I use data or SMS when I arrive in Russia?
Starting 6 October 2025, Russian authorities have introduced a new rule where mobile data and SMS will be blocked for the first 24 hours after you connect to a local network.

2. Can I still make calls?
Yes. Voice calls are not affected — you can still make and receive calls as usual.

3. What can I do while waiting for my roaming to start?
You can use external Wi-Fi for internet access during the 24-hour waiting period until your mobile data becomes available.

4. What happens after 24 hours?
Your mobile data and SMS will automatically be activated once the 24-hour period ends.

If there is no activity on the network-registered SIM card for 3 days after the lock is lifted, the restriction will be applied again for a 24-hour period.

5. What if I restart my phone or switch networks?
The 24-hour block will restart if you change networks or restart your device.

6. Any tips to avoid interruption?

Please avoid restarting your phone and stay connected to the same network and for smoother experience.
