Digital Arrest Scam

Modified on Tue, 1 Oct at 3:01 PM

A new scam called "Digital Arrest" is targeting unsuspecting citizens. In this scam, fraudsters pose as law enforcement officials and use video calls to extort money from their victims. Scammers exploit victims' fear by threatening arrest, legal consequences, or public humiliation if they don't comply with urgent demands.

These fraudsters are experts in psychological manipulation. They know that fear and urgency can cloud judgment, causing people to act impulsively. By creating a false sense of crisis, they pressure victims into making quick decisions without time for rational thinking or verification.

How to spot a Digital Arrest Scam?

  • Unsolicited video calls from unknown numbers, especially those claiming to be from law enforcement or government officials.
  • Scammers create a sense of urgency and use threats to force quick decisions. If you feel rushed or threatened, it’s likely a scam.
  • Scammers may dress in official-looking authority uniforms or use backgrounds that mimic police stations or government offices.
  • Demand for immediate payment to avoid arrest.
  • Scammers might use deepfake technology to mimic real officials. If the video seems too smooth or there are subtle inconsistencies in the person’s facial expressions or voice, it could be a deepfake.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Law enforcement rarely contacts individuals by phone and never threatens immediate arrest. If you receive such a call / video call, hang up and verify through official channels.
  • Stay calm and don’t panic, take a moment to think logically about the situation.
  • Verify the caller’s identity by asking for the caller’s badge number and contact details of their department. Independently verify this information by contacting the agency directly using a verified phone number or email.
  • Look out for subtle inconsistencies in facial expressions or voice that might suggest the use of deepfake technology.
  • Avoid giving out passwords or personal details unless you’re sure the recipient is legitimate.
  • Use strong antivirus software, firewalls, and keep your system updated. Be cautious about downloads and granting remote access.
  • Contact local authorities or trusted individuals if you receive suspicious communication.
