Fake 6-Digit Verification Codes Scam on WhatsApp

Modified on Fri, 08 Mar 2024 at 04:53 PM

Dear Subscribers,

It has come to our attention that there have been reports of a new scam being spread on WhatsApp. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) made an official statement today and urged WhatsApp users not to share any 6-digit verification codes received from WhatsApp. To see the official statement from MCMC, click here.

Here’s a breakdown of the several tricks and modus operandi used by scammers for you to take note of:

  1. Scammers will disguise themselves as friends or family members with numbers that have been successfully taken over previously and appeal for users' help by turning over their received 6-digit verification code.
  2. Scammers posing as WhatsApp staff will request users to turn over their 6-digit verification code.
  3. Scammers deliberately make several failed verification attempts which leads to the WhatsApp system making automatic calls to the user’s number to inform them of the verification code.
    • Scammers will then disguise and contact users to obtain the verification code or
    • Suppose users do no answer the automatic calls from WhatsApp and it enters voicemail, scammers will try to guess (through random attempt) or request the password or the users' voicemail PIN to access the recording.

  • We urge all WhatsApp users NOT to share their verification code and ignore any suspicious requests.
  • Do NOT click on any links provided in the WhatsApp message and report it immediately.
