Search Engine Phishing

Search Engine Phishing is a deceptive tactic that targets people when they’re least expecting it—while simply searching for something online. Many of us assume that the websites at the top of search results are safe and trustworthy, but that’s not always the case.  

When you search for something on your favorite search engine, most people only click on the links on the first page of results, making it crucial for websites to rank high to get noticed. Cybercriminals exploit this by pushing their fake websites to the top of the search results, just like legitimate companies.  

If you click on one of these phishing websites, they’ll attempt to deceive you into providing sensitive information, or the phishing website may install malware or a virus on your computer or device.

Things to keep in mind:

• Check for "Sponsored" labels: Always be cautious of search results labeled as "Sponsored." These are paid ads that may not always be trustworthy. 
• Inspect the URL: Look closely at the URL before clicking. Legitimate sites have clean, recognizable addresses, while scam sites often have odd or misspelled URLs.  
• Watch for suspicious redirects: If you click on a link and are redirected to a different domain than expected, it’s likely a phishing site. 
• Be wary of requests for sensitive information: If a site asks for sensitive details upfront or prompts unexpected downloads, consider it a red flag. 
• Use trusted sources: Bookmark frequently visited sites to avoid relying on search engines. If in doubt, type the website address directly into your browser. 
• Enable security features: Protect yourself by using a reliable antivirus program and enabling browser security features to detect and block phishing sites. 
• Stay informed: Keep up with the latest phishing tactics and share what you learn to help others stay safe online.
