Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that infects a computer or network and encrypts (locks) the victim's files or devices, making them inaccessible. The attackers then demand a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, in exchange for a decryption key to unlock the files or devices.

How Ransomware Spreads

1. Phishing Email
   Ransomware often comes through fake emails. Clicking a link or opening an attachment infects the system.
2. Malvertising
   Clicking on a deceptive advertisement can download ransomware.
3. Unsolicited Chat Messages
   Ransomware can spread via links in chat or social media messages.

Things to keep in mind:

• Update your operating system and software to patch security vulnerabilities that ransomware can exploit.
• Install reputable antivirus and anti-malware software to detect and prevent ransomware infections.
• Regularly backup your important files to an external device or cloud storage. In case of an attack, you can restore your data without paying a ransom.
• Avoid opening email attachments or clicking on links from unknown or suspicious sources. Be cautious of phishing emails.
• Use strong, complex passwords for your accounts.
• On a network, limit user permissions to only what's necessary for their job. This can reduce the potential impact of ransomware.

Reminder: Paying the ransom is generally discouraged as it doesn't guarantee that you'll get your files back and encourages criminal activity. It's better to take preventive measures and have backups in place to protect your data.
